Friends of Science has sent a letter to the Association for Psychological Science requesting that the paper Lewandowsky et al (2013): "NASA Faked the Moon Landing - Therefore, (Climate) Science is a Hoax: An Anatomy of the Motivated Rejection of Science" be retracted.
Our letter is here.
Friends of Science issued a PRWeb press release announcing our request here.
Excerpts of our letter states:
Friends of Science Society respectfully request that the paper "NASA Faked the Moon Landing -
Therefore, (Climate) Science is a Hoax: An Anatomy of the Motivated Rejection of Science" be
withdrawn on grounds of violating the spirit and intent of the Committee on Publication Ethics
(COPE) ethical guidelines specifically 1.5 champion freedom of expression.
As experts in the area of social psychology, it would seem to have been self-evident that, in the
contentious world of climate science, such a title would immediately subject any dissenting
climate scientist or individual to public humiliation - thus violating the COPE principle of
championing freedom of expression from the outset.
However there are other grounds upon which this paper should be disqualified, in our opinion.
We dispute Lewandowsky 's findings in that his claims about climate change evidence are
incorrect. [End Excerpt]
The letter shows that Lewandowsky incorrectly claims there is over 90% consensus concerning climate science. The cited references do not support this claim.
The lack of global warming over the last 16 years, testimony by leading climate experts and analysis by scientists independent of the IPCC indicate that the warming effects of CO2 emissions are small and likely net beneficial.
The paper is based on fake responses to a survey sent by Lewandowsky to anti-skeptic blogs. It is unlikely that any prominent climate skeptic believes that NASA faked the moon landing.
